What Is Image Posterization?
Posterization reduces the number of distinct tonal values in each color channel of an image. Instead of smooth gradients, you get flat blocks of color — the bold, graphic style seen in pop art and political posters. The fewer levels you choose, the more dramatic and abstract the result. This tool applies posterization independently to the Red, Green, and Blue channels, preserving the original hues while reducing tonal complexity.

FAQ
What level count gives the best poster look?
Levels 2–4 give the most dramatic, graphic poster effect with flat blocks of color. Levels 5–8 retain more of the original photo while still looking stylized. Above 8, the effect becomes increasingly subtle and may be hard to notice.
Does posterization affect image quality?
Posterization permanently changes pixel values. If you save as JPEG, additional compression artifacts may appear. Saving as PNG preserves the exact posterized result without further loss.
What's the difference between posterize and dithering?
Posterization snaps each pixel to the nearest allowed tone without error compensation, producing clean flat color areas. Dithering spreads quantization error to neighboring pixels to simulate additional tones, creating a textured dot pattern instead of flat bands.
