What is a Flooring Calculator?

A flooring calculator helps you estimate how many tiles, planks, or boxes of flooring material you need to cover one or more rooms. It accounts for waste — the extra material cut off at edges and corners — so you don't run short mid-project. Whether you're installing hardwood, laminate, vinyl, or ceramic tile, knowing the exact quantity prevents costly over-ordering or frustrating mid-project supply runs.

How to Use the Flooring Calculator

  1. Enter the length and width of each room you want to floor
  2. Add multiple rooms with the "Add Room" button for combined totals
  3. Enter the flooring piece dimensions (tile or plank size) if you know them
  4. Enter the box coverage in sq ft if buying pre-packaged flooring
  5. Set your waste percentage (10% is typical for most installs)
  6. Optionally add price per box to get a material cost estimate

Features

  • Multi-room support — add unlimited rooms and get a combined total
  • Supports feet, meters, inches, and centimeters for both room and tile dimensions
  • Adjustable waste percentage (typical range: 5–15%)
  • Calculates individual pieces needed and boxes needed
  • Optional cost estimate based on price per box

Frequently Asked Questions

How much waste should I add?

A 10% waste factor is standard for most flooring projects with straight cuts. Use 15% for diagonal patterns or rooms with many angles and cutouts. For complex herringbone or chevron patterns, add 15–20%. It's always better to have a few extra pieces than to run short, since dye lots can vary between production runs.

What is box coverage?

Flooring is sold in boxes containing multiple planks or tiles. Each box covers a certain number of square feet, listed on the packaging. Enter this number in the "Coverage per Box" field to calculate exactly how many boxes to purchase.

Should I include closets and small alcoves?

Yes — add closets, hallways, and alcoves as separate rooms or include them in the main room dimensions. For odd-shaped rooms, break them into rectangles and add each as a separate room entry to get an accurate total.
